Ex-works (EXW)

The Incoterm where the buyer collects from the seller's site and carries cost and risk from that point.

What is a ex-works (exw)?

Ex-works is an Incoterm under which the seller makes the goods available at their own premises and the buyer takes responsibility for everything after that: booking the carrier, loading arrangements, freight cost, insurance, and risk in transit. It places the maximum obligation on the buyer and the minimum on the seller of any Incoterm. The seller's duty is discharged when the goods are made available at the agreed place and time, correctly packed and identified; the seller is not required to load them onto the buyer's vehicle unless the contract says so. Ex-works pricing is therefore not comparable with a delivered price, because the freight, handling and insurance still have to be added to reach a landed cost. For surplus material this is the common arrangement, since consignments are irregular in size and the buyer is usually better placed to consolidate the movement with their own inbound freight.

How Surply uses it

Every listing at launch is ex-works, and this is enforced in the database rather than left to the interface. The buyer books and pays their own carrier and collects from the seller's site. The pickup suburb, state and postcode are shown so a buyer can rate the freight before enquiring.

Also known as: EXW, ex works incoterms, buyer-arranged freight.
